For anyone who has seen a frozen steak slapped on the eye after tragic baseball accident, or seen an individual RICE-ing after an injury on the field or court, it is common knowledge that the application of cold is common for acute mechanical injuries.
Many people are confused as to when to use either ice or heat or painkillers and muscle relaxers. And even if you knew which to use, there are a few common mistakes individuals make when applying their chosen home therapies.
Here we are offering a few tips in hopes that your efforts at home to manage your pains will be fruitful and you can avoid complicating the pains you may suffer as a part of life.
Ice until tissue is numb. (Depending on tissue thickness this maybe as little as 2 min or as long as 20 min). If it's not numb after 20 min either you have too much toweling or what your using to ice isn’t cold enough.
Remove ice for half the time it took to get numb. (if it took 10 min to get numb take it off for 5).
Repeat 2 more times. Take 30-45 min break. Repeat above process PRN
Always have some sort of toweling between your skin and your chosen icing tool.
Always have a timer!
