Piriformis Stretching

Hi. Dr. Williams with Cedar City Chiropractic and Rehabilitation. Today we are going to talk about stretching the piriformis. If you look online, you’ll see a lot of people who will show you just leaning forward just like this will give a good little stretch, which it does. I like to take it a step further and do a little bit more, because that’s how I am. So we are going to do a thing called a “Tri-Planar” stretch. So we are going to stretch the piriformis on three different planes. So what you do is you leave the lower extremities like this and cross your leg, torso you are going to rotate 45 degrees this way, then you are going to tip your shoulder down towards your leg. Now you are going to hold that for 5-10 seconds or up to 20 seconds. Now you go forward doing the same things for the same length of time. Then you go 45 degrees to the other side and then tip that left shoulder towards the ground. When you do that, it gives a fuller stretch of that piriformis and can help with piriformis syndrome, definitely coming into our clinic so we can help you diagnose the issue and problem and get you the proper care that you need.
