"Minor" Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA's)

After any accident, whether a slip on ice or a car accident, the damaged body begins to heal. It’s during that healing period we can have a profound impact on the direction and speed of healing. Too many times we’ve had patients report during a history that they were involved in a “minor” car accident 6 month to 3 to 5 years earlier and did nothing about it. Because they did not want to cause a problem, or were fearful of insurance repercussions, or the damage to there vehicle was minimal, or they needed to punish themselves for having an accident so they assumed everything was okay they wait and see. Little did they know that muscle, ligaments, and tendons were beginning to heal wrong.

Most people involved in low speed collisions don’t take a ride on the ambulance and don’t go to the ER. If they have some discomfort, they might take some Ibuprofen or get some meds from there MD, and chalk up the pain and discomfort to old age. Rarely do they get evaluated by a bio-mechanical specialist who can provide some helpful therapy, give simple suggestions, and help them to heal properly and quickly. Never needing to experience the head aches, neck pain, arm pain, that walk in my door 5 year later, that require much more therapy just to restore them back to normal.

A major dilemma exists in the Auto industry between the car manufactures and the insurance industry as each would like to protect the passengers and provide a vehicle that is not easily damaged or deformed. These two goals aren’t perfectly satisfied. Modern cars have stiffer frames and spring like bumpers; this protects the vehicle from deforming during low speed collisions; unfortunately, the forces during these types of accidents are transmitted directly to the occupants rather than being absorbed by the vehicle, increasing the "neck snap." GM did a study regarding low speed auto collisions, (speed below 8 MPH), and discovered, to no surprise, that injuries do occur in low speed collisions. 50% of those injuries were whiplash. They also discovered that 30% of those injured still had NP 3 years later.
